Groundbreaking celebrated on Rosh Pinah Solar Park

WINDHOEK, KHOMAS REGION, 12 May, 2022 – Emesco has announced the official start of construction on Rosh Pinah Solar Park, its 5.7 MW solar PV plant, jointly owned with Otesa in Rosh Pinah, Namibia. The plant will supply renewable energy to Trevali Mining Corporation’s Rosh Pinah Mine, located in Namibia, in support of its efforts to reduce its carbon footprint.

The partnership between Trevali and Rosh Pinah Solar Park is one of the first bi-lateral power purchase agreements under the Namibian Modified Single Buyer Framework, allowing independent power producers to directly sell electricity to transmission connected customers.

The ground breaking ceremony was attended by several representatives of Trevali, including Derek du Preez, Chief Operating Officer.

In his key-note address, Derek recognised the positive contribution of the partnership between Trevali, Emesco, Otesa, NamPower and other stakeholders of the project, and further stated that the Rosh Pinah mine, having been in existence for 50 years, is focusing on its expansion and that the development of the solar PV plant is a step in the right direction for Trevali to meet its larger ESG objectives.

Dr. Jerry Mameja and Schalk van Niekerk represented Otesa, shareholder, and main contractor of the Rosh Pinah Solar Park.  Otesa has extensive experience in delivering Namibian infrastructure and has previously worked with the Emesco team on two solar PV projects of similar size in Okatope, Namibia.

Emesco, Rosh Pinah Solar Park shareholder, was represented at the ceremony by, amongst others, Rinus Strydom, Managing Director, and Pieter Rossouw, Commercial Director. Emesco developed the Rosh Pinah Solar Park and will perform the engineering and procurement services during the implementation phase, and, on completion, provide operations, maintenance and asset management services to Rosh Pinah Solar Park.

Pieter Rossouw, Director of Rosh Pinah Solar Park said, “Emesco is proud to start construction on Rosh Pinah Solar Park. Reaching this important milestone in the project is the culmination of months of preparation and close co-operation between Trevali, RPSP and numerous stakeholders. We applaud Trevali for their commitment to reducing their environmental footprint and thank them for entrusting this initiative to Emesco.”
